SGP102 is now ready for collection

We have something a bit different this week: not the usual ideas for classroom practice but a couple of
thought-provoking articles. The first is a bang up-to-date piece on the future of education from Geoff
Turrell and we contrast this with another ‘blast from the past’ – Richard Fothergill’s MAPE conference
speech from 1982. There is just room for a WOTW and to finish we have a press release from Inveraray
Jail to remind you about our wonderful new resource.

The magazine can be downloaded from http://www.ictopus.org.uk/ Log-in first then go to the SGP tab.

SGP99 is now ready for collection

In this issue, our last SGP of the academic year, we begin with a big congratulations to Jacqui Johnson, one of our regular writers. We follow that with episode 12 in Philip Griffin’s Adventures with a Learning Platform and we have some news of this summer’s Big Butterfly Count. Tricia Neal shows us some i-apps for early learners and finally Leon Cych tells us about TeachMeet.

New lessons2go

The next pair of lessons2go is now available. This week we have a pair of music lessons for older pupils.  Both lessons use music resources from the internet. The idea of using such resources could be useful in other contexts too.

This week we have activities for the following age groups:

Age 8-9:  Music, Voices
This activity will take two lessons in which the children will learn to discern the different ranges of the singing voice. In the first lesson children listen to and compare soprano and alto voices and in the second lesson they will compare tenor and bass voices.

Age 10-11: Music, Trains
This lesson uses the sounds and rhythms of train travel to build up a repeated rhythm and chant before listening to some extracts from Starlight Express and learning some of the songs.

Please login first, then access the activities via the lessons2go tab. To see these lessons select ‘Latest items’.

If you have used a good idea which incorporates the use of computers into your lessons, please think about sharing them with the rest of the ictopus group. Send your lesson to us using the ‘contact us’ link on the website.

ictopus: lessons2go

The next pair of lessons2go is now available. These MFL activities could easily be adapted for different
age groups. The differentiation notes give ideas for simplifying the activities, and there are notes for
extending the activities too.

Both activities could be easily adapted for any MFL.

This week we have activities for the following age groups:

Age 8-9:  MFL, Identity cards
This activity involves pupils using a word processor to produce an ‘identity card’. Passport photographs
of the children can be created using a digital camera. Once completed, the identity cards can be emailed
to each other internally, or to a French-speaking partner school (bearing in mind safe use policies).

Age 9-10: MFL, Telling the time
In large groups and then individually or in smaller groups, the children practise asking and telling the
time on the hour, concentrating on the written form. Combining text and graphics, they label clock faces
with the correct times, or vice versa, and add activities that generally occur at those times.

Please login first, then access the activities via the lessons2go tab. To see these lessons select ‘Latest
items’.

If you have used a good idea which incorporates the use of computers into your lessons, please think
about sharing them with the rest of the ictopus group. Send your lesson to us using the ‘contact us’ link
on the website.

Next, Jim Brierley tells us about the Myths and Legends website and in particular how to use it for story writing. Finally Kate Valentine explains how Radiowaves can be used across the curriculum.

The magazine can be downloaded from here. Log-in first then go to the SGP tab.

Sharing Good Practice – 93

This week’s Sharing Good Practice (Number 93) complements i@h13 which highlighted some of the ICT features of the Weather for Schools website. Teachers might also find it useful to look at that issue of i@h for further ideas. To quote from the introductory video on the website: ’Whether for education or for fun, we hope you find this website useful!’

Remember if you wan to be alerted to each new edition of SGP you can subscribe to the RSS feed on this blog site.
